The rug is different from carpet due to its design and its material. Firstly the carpet is normally wall to wall in a room and they are square in shape or just like the shape of the room. However this is not the case with the rug and a rug is normally rectangular in shape and they come in few sizes. They can not easily be found in a very large size.  Secondly a carpet normally uses cotton and synthetic material where as the rug uses typically all natural materials and fibers such as wool area rugs and sisal, jute and cotton. Also the carpets are nowadays being made on the machine but the rug is still being made by hand in many places.
