If you live in or near a large or medium sized city, then it’s likely wireless internet is available to you. But is it really what it’s cracked up to be? Let’s consider a few of the advantages and disadvantages. First of all, the main advantage is that you’re always online as long as you’re within your coverage area. Not only does this mean you can get online on the go, but it means that if you move to a new location, you won’t have to deal with setting up a new internet provider. You will already be setup and online – again, provided you’re within the coverage area.
Of course one of the reasons that people are weary of switching ISP service providers to wireless is because there is an initial investment required in most cases. You may have to buy new equipment, or you may have to pay an activation fee. The good news though is that there are actually several ways you may be able to avoid it. First, you might be able to get cash back on new equipment, or rent it from the wireless company. Second, you can find online deals that offer free activation or cash back. With these online deals, it may not cost you anything to make the switch.

When you have kids and you have high speed internet, it can be difficult to know where to draw the line. You do want your kids to grow up understanding the internet and how it works, as it will certainly put them at a disadvantage if they’re totally unfamiliar with online searching. On the other hand, you certainly can’t just let them go and search for anything that pops into their minds. So where do you draw the line? Luckily, there are programs that will help you do that. Often referred to as nanny programs, they will automatically filter sites that are inappropriate for your children.
One of the advantages of these programs is that they’re highly customizable and can be used with any type of internet access, including satellite providers. You can choose to have your kids only have access to sites that you specifically approved, you can choose to have your kids access sites that the program approves or you can find some combination of the two. The downside to these programs is that they can miss a site here or there. They can also make it difficult for adults to access the internet. Typically typing in a password will take off the restrictions but some parents find this an inconvenience that they’re not willing to deal with.

According to the August 3 Post Tech column in the Washington Post, Hayley Tsukayama reports that experts at McAfee Security recently found extensive evidence of a wide array of cyber attacks on the USA. The report said that it appears the attacks originated in mainland China. McAfee said the hacks were made on approximately seventy companies and/or government agencies over a couple of months. The companies attacked include the United Nations, the United States Energy Department, the International Olympic Committee and the Associated Press. You can find out more about web security in your community by searching for Internet providers by zip code.
In a somewhat related article, the Casa Grande Express reported last month that Qwest has been chosen to replace the Casa Grande City Hall’s ten year old Nortel system with a digital, Cisco SmartNet system. This new system employs VoIP (voiceover Internet protocol). That means it will deliver voices over a data network instead of an older type telephone line. This technology opens up the network to many additional automated features. For example, all incoming phone calls can be tracked via computer. Also, a central location will be designated that will permit staff personnel to see where phones are ringing anywhere within their department. Qwest is the provider of a wide spectrum of digital services, including high speed Internet, Qwest DSL, digital television and digital telephone services.

If you are making people wait, you might want to give them something to do like read a magazine and here is why:
1. Appearance. The appearance of your waiting area will be enhanced with the careful placement of select magazines. You can even use them in an organized fashion as decorative pieces, or as fillers for small furniture pieces such as magazine holders or coffee tables.
2. Sophistication. Closely related to appearance is the sophistication you can give your waiting room by having an assortment of magazines from which to choose. Magazines are a common sign that an area is a waiting room, and that is something you certainly want to convey to your clientele.
3. Comfortableness. We all know the feeling of being in a waiting room full of people. Whether it is looking over their to-do list from a month ago, reading year-old text messages, or scanning the terms and conditions on the back of that expired gift card, people have a desperate need to avert their eyes to a place other than making eye contact with strangers. An ample supply of magazines is a simple solution to this problem.
4. Time. Providing the option for your clients to read will help pass the minutes for them. They will not mind long wait times as much if they have something to keep their mind occupied, and their memory of their time at your location will be more favorable.
5. Education. Magazines can also be educational for your clients. Granted, some magazines are better suited towards those ends than others, but they will appreciate that they are learning something useful in their downtime.
If you move your office don’t forward to fill out a
change of address to make sure your magazines get forwarded.
