Whenever I was around my Grandma when she made hot apple cider, I noticed that she always tossed in a tea bag. Two years ago I moved into a beautiful new home with a porch that wrapped around the front of the house, down the side and into the back yard. It was this porch that sold me on the place because I love living outside most of the year. In fact, I will stand in the snow to grill in the dead of winter because there is nothing like being outside. My wife, however, is a designer and insisted on trying a railing planter at several locations to spruce up the porch and give it a little color.

We have had several aluminum rail planters for two seasons now and it’s amazing how much they lend to the atmosphere outside. They are really very pretty and when winter sets in I really miss them being in full bloom. The aluminum has held up very well and they have also held their silver color much better than I had anticipated. We have many other outdoor planters and really enjoy them all along the porch and railing. We are constantly getting compliments on how nice everything looks outside and it is an enjoyable place to spend a great deal of our time.

I used to buy quite a bit of red bean and rice mix. I love it as a side with any type of grilled meat. I also make a one pot meal out of it by adding some cooked chicken and sausage to it. It’s just a handy mix to have around to fix a quick side or main dish. Unfortunately it is only available in my area as a brand item, and prices for those have shot up over the past six months or so. To at least try and get my grocery budget back under control, I started looking for some recipes and suggestions to make some of these convenience foods, including the bean and rice mix myself.

I came across a website that has a great recipe for it that was pretty simple to put together and actually tastes better than the name brand stuff. I’ve gone through the entire bean recipe section of the site and have come across quite a few more recipes that my family loves. I’d forgotten all about a good pot of lentil soup or pinto beans. Now that’s some yummy, hardy meals that fill your stomach and are very cheap to make.
